2024 Superintendent Search

Upon the announcement of Superintendent Dr. John Gaddis' retirement at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, the Somerset Board of Education began conducting the search for the next Superintendent of Somerset County Public Schools. The details of the search process, relevant news and milestones are documented on this page of SCPS' website as they occur.

June 2, 2024: Tasker-Mitchell Named the Next Superintendent of SCPS

Dr. Ava Tasker-Mitchell, recently named the next Superintendent of Somerset County Public Schools, will assume duties on July 1, 2024, pending contract negotiations & formal action by the Somerset Board of Education at the June 18, 2024 regular meeting.

February 29, 2024	Consultants facilitate planning meeting with Board of Education

March 25-31, 2024	Consultants facilitate community engagement: Collect online survey feedback from members of the school community (available online March 25-31) Conduct interviews with focus groups, Board of Education Focus Group

February-April 2024	Accept and screen applications

Early April, 2024	Consultants present New Superintendent Profile to the Board

Late April, 2024	Consultants interview and vet promising candidates

May 10, 2024	Consultants present slate of 5-7 recommended candidates to the Board, interviewing workshop

May 17, 2024	Board conducts initial interviews of 5-7 candidates

May 24, 2024	Board conducts second interviews of 3 finalists over a 3-day period

May 28 & 29, 2024	Candidate finalist "Meet & Greet" events, 5:30 p.m., Somerset County Technical High School

May 31, 2024	Board selects their preferred candidate, subject to approval by the State Superintendent, successful negotiation of contract and formal Board approval in open session, and may choose to conduct a site visit or conduct reference calls

Week of June 3, 2024	Board seeks State Superintendent approval of selection

Week of June 10, 2024	Board negotiates contract with selected candidate

Week of June 17, 2024	Board takes formal action on the new superintendent’s contract

July 1, 2024	New superintendent assumes duties
