Dual Enrollment Program
Dual enrollment, also known as concurrent enrollment or dual credit, is a program that allows high school students to take college courses and earn college credit while still in high school. Students can enroll in college courses for dual enrollment in participation institutions of higher learning, which include Wor-Wic Community College, U.M.E.S., and Salisbury University. Students may choose to attend these courses on the college campus or on an SCPS campus if offered. Check with the school counselor for available courses.
In 2013 the Maryland General Assembly passed the College and Career Readiness legislation, followed in 2021 by the Maryland Blueprint for Education, requiring all public school systems to implement classes where students are enrolled in public school classes as well as college classes for college credit. Somerset County Public Schools offers two ways for students to participate in this opportunity:
enroll in college classes on a college campus or
enroll in college classes offered at an SCPS school.
Dual Enrollment courses cannot replace MCAP courses. Courses taught by SCPS teachers will count toward student G.P.A. and will use value added weighting whereas courses taught by non-SCPS staff will not count towards G.P.A.
Successful completion will lead to college credit and in some instances, high school credit.
