WESTOVER, MD (April 23, 2024) - The late William McKinley Miles represented District 1 on the Somerset County Board of Education from 2001 - 2014, serving as a member, Vice Chair and Chairperson during his tenure. After Miles' passing in late 2019, challenges with scheduling and the COVID pandemic delayed the presentation of William "Bill" Miles' board recognition to his surviving siblings until the recent April 2024 board meeting.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Gaddis, and the Somerset Board of Education presented Pastor Miles' family members with his board member name plate and a proclamation in memory of his service to the students and faculty of Somerset County Public Schools. During his presentation, Gaddis remarked on the positive and determined attitude of the former Board Chairperson, noting his pride in the Food & Nutrition Service revenues realized after the school system implemented the USDA's Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program that has provided free breakfast and lunch to all SCPS students since 2014.
An educator for thirty-eight years, Miles taught math at the collegiate and high school levels at various institutions across the Eastern Shore of Maryland and later served as an administrator in Wicomico County until retirement. Pastor Miles' founded the first boys baseball team at Somerset Junior Senior High, and was revered by his siblings in their remarks as a passionate advocate for education and a talented baseball player.
