WESTOVER, MD (October 23, 2024) – Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) has introduced a new Virtual Day Instruction Plan to ensure uninterrupted learning during inclement weather. Approved by the Somerset County Board of Education for the 2024-2025 school year, this plan allows SCPS to provide virtual instruction on days when severe weather conditions prevent in-person attendance.
Students will engage in four hours of synchronous, teacher-led instruction using their school-issued laptops or tablets. Lessons will be structured to cover core subjects, including math, English, science, and social studies. Teachers will also hold virtual office hours to support students needing additional help.
The Virtual Day Instruction Plan is designed to limit disruptions in academic progress and reduce the need to extend the school year by eliminating make-up days due to weather closures. This initiative reflects the system’s commitment to maintaining instructional continuity while prioritizing the safety of students and staff.
SCPS has also developed clear guidelines and expectations for virtual learning. Attendance will be monitored during virtual instruction, and students are expected to participate fully, adhering to daily schedules provided by their teachers. Parents and guardians will receive notifications through the system’s communication channels, such as automated phone calls, emails, and the SCPS website, when the Virtual Day Instruction Plan is activated.
Superintendent Dr. Tasker-Mitchell stated, “This year, we have already used two (2) of three (3) designated make-up inclement weather days due to school closures for flooding. Once we exhaust our third day, we will transition to virtual school days to keep students learning even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. We’re pleased to offer a flexible and safe option for our students that ensures educational consistency throughout the school year.”
