WESTOVER, MD (February 24, 2025) – Leonard B., a senior at Washington High School (WHS), has set a new milestone as the first student within Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) to complete the Apprenticeship Maryland Program (AMP). Initiated during his junior year after a semester-long course in Foundation of Construction at Somerset County Technical High School (SCTHS), Leonard dedicated himself to a rigorous 450-hour apprenticeship experience.
Supported by the Tri-County Council and the Rural Maryland Prosperity Investment Fund (RMPIF) grant, which funds these valuable opportunities, Leonard served as a Maintenance Technician Apprentice for SCPS. Throughout his apprenticeship, he collaborated closely with Maintenance Technicians, Mr. Tawes at SCTHS and Mr. Crockett at WHS, and contributed significantly while working alongside the custodial crew led by Mr. Tilghman at WHS.
AMP, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, enables students to earn while they learn. By working for an approved employer and completing related instruction—designed jointly by the employer, school, and the Labor Department—participants not only acquire technical expertise but also develop essential soft skills and personal maturity. Leonard’s commitment was further demonstrated during the summer months when he accrued the majority of his work hours, culminating in his program completion in January 2025.
The Somerset Board of Education and Superintendent, Dr. Tasker-Mitchell, recognized Leonard at the February 18, 2025 Regular Open Meeting for being the first SCPS student to complete the Apprenticeship Maryland Program (AMP). For students interested in pursuing similar opportunities through AMP, please contact Mr. Jeremy Michalski, AMP Facilitator at SCTHS.
