Introductory letter from WAHS New Principal, Clifford Owens

April 1, 2025

Dear Washington Academy and High School Community,

With pride and excitement, I introduce myself as the newly appointed Principal of Washington Academy and High School. I’m honored to join a school with such a rich tradition of excellence and look forward to working together to support the success of every scholar. I will officially begin my role on Monday, April 7, 2025, and I’m eager to meet students, staff, families, and community members as we begin this next chapter.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve served students from Pre-K through 12th grade, driven by a passion for helping young people grow academically, behaviorally, and culturally—what I call the ABCs of education. These values will guide our work at WAHS as we create an environment where every student is challenged to reach their full potential.

My commitment is to ensure our scholars not only succeed academically but are prepared to compete in a dynamic, global world. Through expeditionary learning, they’ll be encouraged to think critically, solve problems creatively, and strive for excellence in all they do.

As a transformation principal, I’ve led several schools through meaningful growth and improvement, including one recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. I believe in the power of relationships and collaboration—and together, we’ll make WAHS a place where every voice is valued and every student is supported through a whole-child approach.

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. Shelton Handy for his admirable service as Acting Principal. His leadership and dedication have helped maintain a strong and caring school environment. I’m happy to share that Mr. Handy will remain a part of WAHS’ administration team as an Assistant Principal, and I look forward to working closely with him.

I’m thrilled to join the Jaguar family and look forward to connecting with each of you in the weeks ahead. Together, we will accomplish great things for our students.

With gratitude and high expectations,

Clifford Owens
Principal
