WESTOVER, MD (July 3, 2024) – Somerset County Public Schools’ (SCPS) newly appointed Superintendent, Dr. Ava Tasker-Mitchell, recently began a four-year term; assuming office on July 1, 2024. Dr. Tasker-Mitchell, a former Instructional Director and Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Prince George’s County Public Schools, was appointed by the Somerset County Board of Education in June 2024 upon the approval of the Superintendent’s four-year contract.
During her first week in office, the new Superintendent toured SCPS’ schools, meeting faculty, staff and students participating in summer programs. Prioritizing relationship-building early on, Tasker-Mitchell shared an opening letter to the community, expressing her eagerness to meet and collaborate with the school system’s many stakeholders.
In an excerpt from her opening letter, Tasker-Mitchell affirms, “I am committed to and I look forward to working closely with the Somerset school community to uphold the mission of Somerset County Public Schools. Together, we will celebrate our accomplishments, address challenges with resilience, and create a positive and nurturing educational environment where every student feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential.”
The new Superintendent will announce future plans to host a series of Listening and Learning sessions across Somerset County in all 8 schools in the fall. The sessions will be open to the community with the purpose of gathering stakeholder feedback for the development of the Superintendent’s Strategic Plan for SCPS.
